ProBlocker downloads updated filter lists automatically on a regular schedule. However, if ads start appearing — especially on YouTube — manually forcing an update ensures you have the latest blocking rules immediately.
Manual Update Steps
- Click the ProBlocker icon in your browser toolbar
- Click Options (or the gear/settings icon)
- Navigate to the Filter lists tab
- Click Update now or Check for updates
- Wait for the progress indicator to complete
- Reload any tabs where ads were appearing
What Are Filter Lists?
Filter lists are plain-text files containing rules that tell ProBlocker which URLs to block. The main lists include EasyList (ad domains), EasyPrivacy (trackers), and malware domain lists. ProBlocker downloads updates automatically to keep rules current as ad networks change their domains and delivery methods.
YouTube and other major platforms periodically change their ad delivery URLs specifically to bypass blockers. When this happens, filter list maintainers update the lists with new rules — usually within hours to days of the change.
How Often Does ProBlocker Update Filter Lists?
ProBlocker checks for filter list updates automatically. If you want the most current rules immediately after a YouTube ad bypass is announced, use the manual update above.
